Start Before You're Ready
How Courage, Consistent Action and Small Daily Steps Lead to Extraordinary Success
One of the greatest obstacles to success is the belief that we must be completely prepared before we begin. We convince ourselves that we need more knowledge, more money, more confidence or more time before taking the first step. Yet history is filled with ordinary people who achieved extraordinary things not because they were perfectly prepared, but because they were willing to begin despite uncertainty.
The perfect moment rarely arrives. Success belongs to those who choose courage over comfort, action over excuses and progress over perfection. Every meaningful achievement starts with one simple decision; to begin. If you wait until you feel completely ready, you may spend your entire life waiting. Start today, learn along the way and trust that each step will bring you closer to the life you were created to live.
When I was younger, I had to grapple with a stammer which effectively affected my confidence. I was shy, not able to communicate properly and felt less capable but beneath all those setbacks, there were many capabilities I personally didn’t know I had.
In secondary school in my home town of Thyolo in Malawi, something extraordinary happened. Out of hundreds of boys, I was voted to become a Head Boy, which in effect was a leadership position, being the mouthpiece of all the boys at the school. I was also voted to be the Captain for the Volleyball Team, another leadership role. This also became a norm both at University and in the work place. How could someone with speech and communication issues end up in such demanding leadership roles, I asked myself.
I wasn’t prepared for it, I wasn’t the best candidate, I wasn’t the most intelligent or the most outspoken but I took on the challenge nevertheless and performed well in each of those roles. This is why this newsletter reminds us again and again, Start Before You’re Ready, you don’t have to have the perfect conditions, enough money, spare time or the right capabilities, just start that business, that project, apply for that job, write that book. You’re going to surprise yourself down the line.
The Perfect Moment Is a Myth
Many people postpone their dreams because they are waiting for life to become easier. They tell themselves they will start their business when they have more money, write their book when they have more time or improve their health when life becomes less busy.
Unfortunately, perfect circumstances rarely exist. Life will always present challenges, responsibilities and unexpected obstacles. Those who succeed understand that progress begins in the middle of life’s imperfections, not after they disappear.
A young professional who dreams of earning a promotion may never feel completely qualified. However, by volunteering for new projects, learning additional skills and embracing opportunities before feeling fully prepared, they gain the experience that eventually leads to career advancement.
Courage Always Comes Before Confidence
Many people believe confidence comes first and action follows. In reality, the opposite is usually true. Confidence grows through repeated action. Every time you face a challenge, overcome fear and take another step forward, your belief in yourself becomes stronger. Waiting to feel confident before acting often leads to endless delay.
Think about someone learning to drive. During the first few lessons they may feel nervous and uncertain. Yet after weeks of consistent practice, driving becomes second nature. Confidence was not present at the beginning; it was built through experience.
Small Steps Create Extraordinary Results
Great achievements rarely happen overnight. They are the result of many small, consistent actions repeated over time. Reading ten pages a day, saving a little money each month, exercising regularly or writing a few hundred words every morning may seem insignificant, but these habits produce remarkable long-term results.
Imagine someone wanting to complete a marathon. They do not begin by running 26 miles. Instead, they start with short runs, gradually increasing their endurance until what once seemed impossible becomes achievable. Success is built one step at a time.
Learn While You Move Forward
Many people spend years preparing but never actually begin. They read books, watch videos, attend seminars and make detailed plans, yet remain stuck because they fear making mistakes. While preparation is valuable, real growth happens through experience. Every challenge teaches lessons that no classroom can provide.
An aspiring entrepreneur may spend months researching business ideas, but the greatest learning begins only after launching the business. Customer feedback, unexpected problems and daily decisions become the greatest teachers.
Stop Comparing Your Beginning to Someone Else’s Middle
Comparison is one of the fastest ways to lose motivation. Looking at people who have been working toward their goals for years and expecting yourself to match their achievements immediately is both unfair and discouraging. Everyone starts somewhere and every expert was once a beginner.
Consider a new musician watching an accomplished concert pianist. Instead of becoming discouraged, they should remember that the pianist reached that level through years of practice, mistakes and perseverance. Your only competition is the person you were yesterday.
Every Day Is an Opportunity to Begin Again
Not every day will go according to plan. You may miss a deadline, skip a workout or fail to complete a task. The important thing is not allowing one setback to become a permanent excuse. Every new morning offers another opportunity to reset your focus and continue your journey.
A student who performs poorly in one examination still has the opportunity to study differently, seek help and improve in the next assessment. Yesterday’s mistakes do not have to define tomorrow’s results.
Your Future Depends on What You Do Today
The future is not created by dreams alone but by daily decisions. Every action you take today shapes the person you will become tomorrow. Whether your goal is to strengthen your faith, improve your relationships, build a successful career or write a book, the journey begins with today’s choices. Waiting for a better time only delays the life you hope to build.
Imagine looking back one year from now. You could regret another year of postponing your dreams or you could celebrate the progress that began with one courageous decision to start.

Let me get straight to the point.
Every day you delay is another day you will never get back.

The difference between those who achieve their goals and those who live with regret is often one simple decision—to act.
Imagine where you could be just six weeks from now.
